Armenia: Fourth Murder Increase Rate in the World
With just three million population and an alarming emigration, Armenia ranks number four in the world with increase of murder rate, according to the newly-released UN Survey of Crime Trends and Operation of Criminal Justice Systems covering the period 2005 to 2006.
At 37%, Armenia comes behind Bahrain (73%), Jordan (45%), Tajikistan (43%) and is followed by Mauritius, Scotland, Portugal, and others.
UPDATE: The actual number of murders, nonetheless, is not reported in my source. As one reader of this blog explains, if the murder in 2004-2005 was two, for instance, then a murder of three people in 2005-2006 would mean 50% increase.

Please post the actual murder rate, and the ranking in the world, Blogian. If you had 1 murder last year, and 2 this year, that’s a 100% increase which would have put you at the top. So % increase is really not indicative of safety levels, and you know a LOT of people out there are going to misunderstand this statistic and start announcing that Armenia has the fourth HIGHEST murder rate which it does NOT, it had the fourth highest increase. Your blog title also is very misleading.

Raffi, good observations. I made some changes. If you come across to actual murder number/rate, please let me know.

the real numbers are higher. more than 25 murdered last year alone, 10 from march 1st events. 2004-2007 at least i can recall 10-12 murders, 1 of them Levon Gulyan who was murdered by police all because he witnessed a murder himself in front of his chasharan/cafe. he has 2 children and wife, he was innocent, all because he did’nt want to agree to signing something that confesses he “DID NOT SEE ANYTHING”
i would love to see Hayastan authorities try to pull that shit on me. its such an ironic thing, you can walk down the streets of the ghettos of hayastan and not worry for 1 second someone mugging-mudering you, but you can be murdered for NOT AGREEING with gov’t and oligarchs. i’d rather be murdered walking down the ghetto streets, at least i have a standing chance of surviving the attempt

In the first half of 2008 there were 40 murders in Armenia and 11 attempted murders.

Can’t find figures for how many there were in the second half. Regardless, one hopes that an increase isn’t still occurring.
It should be pointed out, for example, that the increase is for 2005-6 and not now.
Incidentally, I tried to download the data from the UN site, but you have to register and I haven’t received my details yet.

This is from the UN Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems 1998 – 2000 published in 2002.
Armenia: 0.0425746 per 1,000 people
Azerbaijan: 0.0285642 per 1,000 people
Georgia: 0.0511011 per 1,000 people
United States: 0.042802 per 1,000 people
United Kingdom: 0.014063 per 1,000 people

Anyway, it’s probably worth trying to get hold of the UN report for the new data. Like I said, did register, but it seems to be a manual process and I haven’t received log-in details yet.

Looks like Armenia matched the US in murder rate. Out of all possible ones, not the best metric to match, IMHO.
