There’s also the somewhat funny (and sad) point to be made that even if the comment LTP made was about a political system that “was basically a feudal system with a little bit of violence sprinkled on top as the hierarchy is enforced through violent means”, then he himself was the first to fit the description in post-independent Armenia…

you can hate on me all you want, you can bash me for being anti semetic all you want, i hate anything & everything EVIL, so if i hate my enemies, does that make me a racist ? i can care less that a JEW is a JEW, i can careless that NIGGER is a NIGGER, but what i do care is if a JEW and/or a NIGGER is scum filthy evil who ruin this planet. all of you try to paint me as a racist, if hating EVIL is being racist, than please by all means PAINT me as a “racist”. the Greeks during Byzantium empire did some acts of evil against HIN HAYASTAN, should i hate Greeks ? am i a racist against the Greeks now ? also…I AM NOT HOMOPHOBIC anything, i am nothing anti GAY, i can careless if someone is GAY or NOT, that is his/her own personal buisness. i dont have any comment and/or negativity towards any GAY/HOMO ppl. in fact i find that if its NOT for GAYS in this world today, we wouldn’t have such style, modern, and classy fashion and among other fashionable easy on the eyes designs of the world. GAYS make a huge contribution to this world with their talents & skills (non sexual performance of course) and i welcome the GAYS insights and ideas of how to make the world a BETTER more MODERN looking place for all of us.

NOTE: just because one defends gay and openly admits NOT being HOMOPHOBE does NOT make one gay. I am very open liberal person, if i am GAY i would have no qualms to admit to it. However…I LOVE our beautiful wonderful gorgeous sexy HAY AXCHIKS who i adore more than any other females on this planet

R, I agree that Hayaser’s comments are quite unhealthy. But I think I will allienate him/her even more by deleting her/his comments (and “confirm” his conspiracy theories). I think by allowing him/her to stay part of the discussion s/he may reconsider racism and homophobia. I want him to know that I consider him Armenian, and I don’t exclude racist Armenians from the list of Armenians.

The ‘Tatar-Mongol’ is an insult; and first of all to all Armenians.

Hayaser is anti-semitic and homophobic. Blogian, as much as free speech is important, hate speech should not be tolerated and I think you should delete Hayaser’s comments.

It is clear that many people still dont get it. It is unacceptable in the civilized world to demonize someone on the basis of ethnicity, religion, race, sexual preference, etc. Likewise for Levon Ter Petrosyan – whatever his intentions were it is unacceptable to use the words ‘Tatar-Mongol’ as an insult.

The Tatar-Mongol rhetoric is aimed at appealing to the base subconscious of the people. It is worse than just racism. Its willful intent is to divide and polarize society against itself.

Don’t be apologists for Levon. When convenient, he is a well read genius, when convenient, he is a naive innocent. He is the chief architect of the mess we live in today in Armenia, he is the chief architect of the graft, corruption and state-crime. Let’s not be apologists for him, please. If you defend him, fine. You can defend the racist trash he spewed and continues to spew. You can have him and Vano and Grzo and Jhangiryan and Lady Hakob and Shamiram and all the other filth. As bad as thing are now, you can never convince me to bring in yesterday’s trash back into the house. That will not clean anything up.

Shiva, the fact is that most protesters interpret LTP’s “Tatar-Mongol” phrase as a reference to “Turks Serzh and Robert from Azerbaijan.” I am very sad that you are defending LTP because you know very well that that is the case. LTP is a very intelligent person and will do the brightest linguistic exercise to argue that he is not racist and doesn’t promote hatred against Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh. But again, he knows very well what he is doing. While “Tatar-Mongol” reference for LTP may personally mean an oppressive feudal system, he knows what exactly “Tatar-Mongol” means to ordinary bitter Armenians. You know very well, Shiva, that LTP says “Tatar-Mongol” to suggest that the current administration members are not real Armenians.

I wonder whether so many of you got angry because you are ardent LTP supporters or because hating Turks shouldn’t be considered racism.

Blogian, I have never heard the Turks being called Tatar-Monghol.

The Turks are called what they are – Turks. The Azeris are called Turks as well. In folklore, an excessively violent person is called a Turk, too.

None of the above are called Tatar-Monghol. I don’t know who you have met in Armenia that has called them that.

It would be good to research a little to see what is meant by ‘Tatar-Monghol regime’ before having thinking that it is a racist slur and getting your feelings hurt.

I’d also agree that Ter-Petrossian needs to change his rhetoric. Even if he didn’t mean it, he knows full well how people will interpret it.

Indeed, I’ve been on Northern Avenue when his supporters and cursed police to their face as “Kharabaghtsi” when actually, they were Armenian police.

The fact is that Ter-Petrossian’s speeches are carefully designed to play on those existing hatreds and divisions within Armenian society and exploit them.

He’s skilled at doing so, it’s true. However, it’s not to be welcomed. Instead, I’d like something new from him and not the same old stuff he and other opposition leaders have spouted since 2003.

The Karabakh thing has been a key campaigning “issue” for them (perhaps the only one) and it’s been used time and time again, including by Ter-Petrossian.

From Mongol-Tartars to bringing “them” to “here.”

Enough is enough and it’s in his interest to change the rhetoric because campaigning like this isn’t going to work with many people forced to choose Serge over him because of it as well as a large group of people in between who want a leader with a vision to follow.

Still, I will say that his return and rhetoric has finally led us to consider and discuss such issues. However, the price was very high indeed.
